What Are Movie Character Jason Voorhees Powers?
Slasher horror movie genre were quite famous in the 1980s and 1990s. Many films that were featured in this genre has certainly given many memorable antogonists who have become horror icons today and are widely utilized in lots of horror / survival themed video games today.
In 1980, writer Victor Miller and director Sean S. Cunningham came together to create a slasher horror movie known as Friday the 13th which really set precedent for the quality of slasher horrors till 1990s.
This first movie featured a team of camp counselors who wanted to ensure the opening of a summer camp, Crystal Lake which has a dark past.
The lake is haunted by what locals say a monster, a killer, a dark entity and the camp counselors’ simple adventure turns into a horror survival.
Age and Family of Jason Voorhees
Jason was born on 1946 to his mother, Pamela Voorhees and unknown father. He was mentally and physically deformed, making him quite difficult to raise.
Becuase of his deformities, he was bullied by everyone, even the children in his school. Nonetheless, his mother loved and cared for him dearly and this led to him developing loyalty for his mother.
Pamela Voorhees worked as a camp cook and one day in 1957, she, along with her son, went to work to the Crystal lake to cook for the teenage camp counselors who had come there.
Unfortunately, teenager Jason was bullied there too, and the counselors pushed him into the lake and didn’t care enough to save him. Eventually, he died and this news led to his mother becoming mad with vengeance.
She took a machete, a knife and then started to mercilessly hunt down everyone who was responsible for her son’s drowning. She succeeded in killing everyone, except one, named Alice, who ultmately battles with her and in the end, rises victorious by decapitating Pamela with her own machete.
The Miraculous Return of Jason Voorhees
In the second movie, Jason was shown to be in great luck as he had miracuasly survived drowning and continued living in cabin deep inside the woods. However, his bad luck came upon him hearing about his mother’s passing. Like mother, he was livid and swore vengeance on her killer.
He was so shooked by his mother’s death, he searched her body, then upon finding it, placed her severed head in a makehift shrine dedicated to her. He took his mother’s machete and this weapon becomes his signature weapon moving forward. He started to hear her voices demanding vengeance on anybody who would set foot in ‘their’ Camp Crystal lake.
Jason tracked down Alice in the city and killed her when she was sleeping. Then, he swore to himself that he would fulfill his mother’s wishes and kill any tresspassers who set foot in Camp Crystal Lake and protect his mother’s body from any ‘external’ disturbances.
This was the dark origin and return of the mass murderer, Jason Voorhees, who set up a path to brutally kill anyone who dared to come in Crystal lake. HIs brutality and shrouded mystery led to that place becoming haunted for other locals.
Vast Arsenal of Powers of Jason Voorhees
Talking about his powers, he has quite a list of them that he has showcased for creating havoc on other people. I have divided them into three tiers for your better understanding – C for ‘generic super powers’, B for ‘outstanding’ and A for ‘awe and fear inducing’.
Again, this doesn’t mean that C tier powers are bad, I mean I would gladly have them in a heartbeat. However, i would have A tier powers if given a option between A and C tiers. It is just a casual measure for us puny mortals to understand the depth and supernaturality of his powers.
Utilizing his vast arsenal of powers, there is a reason why he keeps coming back for his victims and maintain his mother’s wishes for an astounding 12 movies in his franchise!
C Tier Powers of Jason Voorhees
Superhuman Strength:
The first power that Jason has that audience will immediately see is his superhuman strength. Just look at the guy! He is 6’4 and weighs about 275 pounds.
He effortlessly lifts so many people from the ground and even overturns cars. In part 3, he crushes a man’s head just by his bare hands.
His superhuman strength also complements his close combat weapon mastery as he swings his machete quite skillfully and can cleave his victimsin half in just one strike.
Superhuman Stealth:
Even though he has big physique, Jason still has tremendous stealth powers. He has many scenes in the second and third sequal where he just kills multiple people in a single cabin without anyone detecting him.
His victims are always afraid of where he might be at the moment and he always seems to surpise them, creating more jumpscares for the movies too.
Superhuman Senses:
To complement his stealth, he also has superhuman senses. He can hear his victims talking and even feel the life force of his victims from far away and the movies always play his iconic music whenever he uses his senses.
B Tier Powers of Jason Voorhees
Teleportation:
To complement his stealth, he has the teleportation power, which means he can reach his victims from anywhere in a mere second. For example, in part 7, he teleports right inside the lake from the nearby lodge where one of his victims was hiding.
Regeneration:
Throughout the Friday the 13th franchise, many characters have tried to kill Jason and to escape from his clutches. They have used guns, knives and other makeshift weapons and attacked him in the body parts that could prove fatal to a normal human.
However, he keeps coming back even after such supposedly fatal injuries! Tommy Jarvis shoots him a shotgun multiple times, but he still comes back fully healed, stronger.
Need for Oxygen:
After resurrection of Jason Voorhees in part 7, he has become like the undead and the subsequent sequals show him not needing oxygen when he is underwater. He attacks his victims from inside the lake and never slows down when he is swimming underwater.
A – Tier Power of Jason Voorhees
Ressurection:
On of the major powers that Jason has is resurrection. After his death at the hand of Toomy Jarvis, he still ressurrected and continued on his killing spree. This resurrection power has certainly made him viable to come back stronger and hungry for more sequels.
Possession:
Jason has a very unique power i.e. his ability to possess other people. if any person looks at his beating heart, they are said to get hypnotized to eat the heart. This was shown when an FBI agent seemingly ate his heart and became possessed. Afterwards, Jason’s soul will transfer from the host body to another and ultimately, the killing spree continues.
However, this power eventually gets lost when Jason’s niece, Jessica, uses a a unique knife to stab his heart, which draws him down to hell and after this, he loses the power to possess anyone.
Final Thoughts
Whether you like Jason or not, you have to acknowldege that he is a killing machine who has the capability to kill anyone effieicently and with no mercy.
Jason’s astounding powers have given us many thrilling memorable experiences throughout the franchise and has certainly placed him as a formidable villain in the slasher genre. An average person is certainly justified to be afraid of him due to his long list of powers and how he chooses to use it.
Beating him is near impossible as many characters have seemingly destroyed him, but he always finds a way to come back no matter. Somebody wants to kill him with a gun, another wants to put him in hell and another wants to melt him entirely. No matter what, he is truly invincible by slasher horror standards.
Maybe his mother’s love and need to protect crystal lake still binds him to his powers and has condemned him to roam the earth for eternity.
