Steven Adams Career:

Steven Adams rose to prominence as a well-acknowledged professional basketballer. Many Wellington basketball fans knew of his talent while he was still at the city’s basketball academy. They had such high hopes that he’d eventually make it to the big time.

However, he was already showing signs of wanting to join the National Basketball Association (NBA), the top professional basketball league in the world. Before that, though, he had to meet NCAA requirements and finally did so in December 2011.

Meanwhile, the NFL’s Wellington Saints were interested in signing him. He had to play free for an entire season to save his spot in the American college basketball tournament.

Unexpectedly, he played a key role in the Saints’ surprising NBL championship run that year. In 2011, he embarked from New Zealand bound for the United States. His next stop was Massachusetts, where he would attend Notre Dame Preparatory School. Adams only lasted for the academic term.

He had already stated that he met the requirements to enroll in college and compete in the NCAA tournament if he chose to do so in the future. He joined the Pittsburgh Panthers, the university team in Pittsburgh, in 2012.

He spent a year as a player before leaving for the 2013 NBA draft. He played in 32 games, all of which were starts, and averaged 7.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. In addition, he also had a successful season, being named to the Big East All-Rookie Team and the Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year.

Playing in the NBA

As the twelfth overall choice in the first round, Steven was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunders. Adams’s selection made history as he was the first New Zealander player to be taken in the first round of a draught. On July 12, 2013, he became the team’s newest rookie signee and officially became a member of the organization.

Two months later, though, he made his NBA debut with the Thunder, making 18 minutes of action against the Utah Jazz and contributing two points and three rebounds.

Steven stayed healthy enough in his first professional season to participate in all 81 games. While he did not rack up many points in the box score, he made up for it with a high frequency of blocks and boards.

In his rookie year in the NBA, he averaged 3.3 points and 4.1 boards. The New Zealander native worked hard and got better throughout the next seasons. In the second season, he increased his point and rebound averages to above 7.0 per game.

Throughout the years, he maintained the same level of excellence. Additionally, he improved his shooting talents, and in his fourth season, he averaged over 10.0 points each game.

Management saw Steven’s development and success and opted to keep him around. Thus he ended up spending seven NBA seasons with the Thunder. Six times out of seven, he advanced his team to postseason play.

He was bartered to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2020. After the 2020-21 season, the Pelicans decided to trade him, and on August 7, 2021, he officially joined the Memphis Grizzlies.

After more than 60 games played in 2021-22, he is now averaging 9.0 rebounds per game for the Grizzlies.
